History of BMW 5 series

The BMW 5 series is a series of mid-sized luxury sedans and station wagons manufactured by BMW Group in Germany, featuring luxurious designs and high driving performance. The 5 series has been innovating technologies and improving design throughout various generations. Below is a description of the main history and features of the BMW 5 series for each generation.

1st Generation (E12, 1972-1981):
The BMW 5 series began in 1972 with the E12 model. The model was launched in a four-door sedan with four and six-cylinder gasoline engines. The E12 received attention at the time for its combination of high driving performance and ease of driving, and provided a sporty driving experience with rear wheel drive (RWD) and superior operability.

2nd Generation (E28, 1981-1988):
Introduced in 1981, the E28 model was the successor to the E12 model. 3rd Generation (E34, 1988-1996):

In addition, the M5 model was also released around this time, along with various engine options, including the V8 and V6 engines.

5th Generation (E60/E61, 2003-2010):

There were also a range of efficient gasoline and diesel engine options, with the M5 delivering tremendous performance over 500 horsepower.

8th Generation (G60/G61, 2023~): The new 5 series with Full Mode Change has finally been unveiled. The 5 series is reportedly expected to showcase technology that has peaked as an internal combustion engine vehicle before full electrification.
