History of BMW 5 series

The BMW 5 series is a series of mid-sized luxury sedans and station wagons manufactured by BMW Group in Germany, featuring luxurious designs and high driving performance. The 5 series has been innovating technologies and improving design throughout various generations. Below is a description of the main history and features of the BMW 5 series for each generation.

1st Generation (E12, 1972-1981):
The BMW 5 series began in 1972 with the E12 model. The model was launched in a four-door sedan with four and six-cylinder gasoline engines. The E12 received attention at the time for its combination of high driving performance and ease of driving, and provided a sporty driving experience with rear wheel drive (RWD) and superior operability.

2nd Generation (E28, 1981-1988):
Introduced in 1981, the E28 model was the successor to the E12 model. The E28 further expanded the popularity of the BMW 5 series by providing greater interior space and improved driving characteristics. This generation also offered a range of engine and body style options. High-performance M models such as the M535i also appeared during this period.

3rd Generation (E34, 1988-1996):
The E34 model makes the 5 series more modern. This generation has improved front-facing qualifying, safety engineering, and fuel efficiency to deliver a high level of driving stability and convenience. In addition, high-performance M models such as the M5 featured V8 engines, representing the pinnacle of sports sedans.

4th Generation (E39, 1995-2003):
The E39 model further enhances the quality and design of the BMW 5 series. This generation provided advanced built-in materials, innovative safety technology, and improved driving characteristics. In addition, the M5 model was also released around this time, along with various engine options, including the V8 and V6 engines.

5th Generation (E60/E61, 2003-2010):
The E60/E61 model has revolutionized the design of the BMW 5 series more sensibly. This generation has improved the driving and interior experience by introducing iDrive infotainment systems and innovative safety technologies. There were also a range of efficient gasoline and diesel engine options, with the M5 delivering tremendous performance over 500 horsepower.

6th Generation (F10/F11/F07, 2010–2017):
Introduced in 2010, the F10/F11/F07 model is one of the leading five series of designs and performances that deliver more modern design and performance. This generation uses lightweight structures and efficient engines to improve both fuel efficiency and performance. The M5 model uses the twin-turbo V8 engine to deliver incredible acceleration.

7th Generation (G30/G31, 2017-present):
The ongoing G30/G31 model is the latest generation of the BMW 5 series, with innovative technology and advanced built-in. This generation emphasizes eco-friendliness by offering a range of gasoline, diesel and hybrid engine options, and enhances safety and convenience by improving connectivity with the drive assistance system.

8th Generation (G60/G61, 2023~): The new 5 series with Full Mode Change has finally been unveiled. The 5 series is reportedly expected to showcase technology that has peaked as an internal combustion engine vehicle before full electrification.
